TPC Sawgrass 17th hole: What to know about famous ‘Island Green’ at the 2025 Players Championship

Needing to strike a club ranging from a strong sand wedge to a chippy 9 iron, players continue to have nightmares of Pete Dye’s devilish design while competing at The Players Championship. It measures only 137 yards on the official scorecard, but the par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass is anything but straightforward.

The number of water balls has only increased over last few editions of The Players, yet it is not all bad news for competitors as the island green has proven to be a tipping point in many championships, including a few years ago when Cameron Smith’s tee shot in the final round set up a championship-winning birdie.

Rickie Fowler won The Players on the 17th by making three birdies on it during the same Sunday in 2015 (two in a playoff). Sergio Garcia won one in 2008 and lost one in 2013 because of the “Island Green.” Tiger Woods made a quadruple bogey last time he played the event.

Tiger is also the author of probably the most famous moment on the hole, which … was actually a putt. It was 2001 — nearly 25 years ago now — when Tiger hit his “better than most” putt on Saturday before overcoming a two-stroke deficit on Sunday to win for the 26th time in his career. (He went on to win the Masters and hold all four majors and The Players at the same time.)

How do you sum up a hole? You could recall all the memories anecdotally or perhaps relive the mayhem of 2022. Another is a dive into the numbers over the years. Your experience watching (or playing?) may be indicative of the field’s experience in any given year.

Let’s look at the figures including those from last year when a notable record tumbled.

5 — Events in which the hole has played under par on average. Last year, it was 3.08 for the tournament and 3.34 in Round 4 as it played as the most difficult hole on that day. A total of 18 players hit the ball in the water, while Wyndham Clark was one of four players to make birdie on the hole. The former U.S. Open champion exacted revenge from his Saturday performance when he chunked his tee shot into the water. He ultimately finished one stroke behind the winner, Scottie Scheffler.
58 — Balls hit in the water in 2023. The all-time record (since the stat started being kept in 2003) is 93 in 2007. Over the last six playings, this number has surpassed 60 three times (2017, 2021-22). The overall total since 2003 stands at 1,037 entering the week.
50 — Most balls hit in the water during a round. That came in the first round in 2007, and it was more than were hit in the water during the entire 2019 tournament. The hole averaged just about 12 balls in the water per round during last year’s tournament.
14 — Aces at No. 17. There were none from 2003-15, but there have been five in the last three tournaments, including three in 2023: Shane Lowry (2022), Hayden Buckley (2023), Aaron Rai (2023), Alex Smalley (2023) and Ryan Fox (2024). The 2023 event marked the first time there were multiple holes-in-one on 17 in the same tournament.
12 — Highest score ever on this hole came in 2005 when Bob Tway quadrupled the par. It ties the highest score on any hole at TPC Sawgrass during a Players (12 was also shot on the 4th hole once). In 2021, Ben An made a 11 in the first round. Tyson Alexander and Lucas Herbert both made 8s for the highest scores in 2023.
65.96 — The percentage at which players found the green in regulation in 2022, the lowest in championship history. The highest rate came in 2014 when the field found the putting surface at a whooping 86.79% clip.
With all of that mind, we’ll end with a thought ahead entering the 2025 playing of The Players.

The 17th tends to draw golf fans to one side of the aisle or the other. Some believe it to be overrated and given too much air time, while others enjoy the madness and the need for contenders to hit a simple shot in the midst of an otherwise complicated stretch of the championship.

Tiger said this in 2009: “I’ve always thought that that hole is too gimmicky for the 17th hole of a championship.”

From a player’s perspective, it makes sense why some may lean this way. You play well for 16 holes yet one poor wedge shot could lead to a double bogey or worse and sink your championship aspirations. Perhaps it is too penal, but then again, the best players in the world should be able to hit a green from 137 yards.

It can also be considered just a cog in the machine that is a great finishing stretch at TPC Sawgrass. Nos. 16-18 demand players to step up and hit golf shots. Whether they can ultimately decides championships and defines legacies. There will be plenty to watch for on No. 17 this year (as there is every year), especially when the leaders roll up on Saturday and Sunday with a chance to card anything from a two to a seven.

“It is like having a 3 o’clock appointment for a root canal,” Mark Calcavecchia said in 2009. “You’re thinking about it all morning and you feel bad all day. You kind of know sooner or later you’ve got to get to it.”

‘It sucks … doesn’t have much luck’

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Rory McIlroy echoed the sentiments of golfers and golf fans everywhere Wednesday morning at TPC Sawgrass. Speaking with the media ahead of the 2025 Players Championship, the 2019 winner of the tournament winner responded to news that his friend and business partner, Tiger Woods, underwent surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon that will keep the 49-year-old out of action indefinitely.

“It sucks,” McIlroy said. “Yeah, he doesn’t have much luck when it comes to injuries and his body. Obviously he was trying to ramp up to get ready for Augusta [National], and Achilles surgeries obviously aren’t fun. Hoping he’s in good spirits and hoping he’s doing OK. We obviously won’t see him play golf this year, and hopefully we see him maybe play in 2026.”

While Woods has yet to confirm that he will be a no-go for the 2025 Masters next month, given the severity of the injury and recovery timeline from surgery, all signs point to the 15-time major champion being sidelined for at least 4-6 months. When he will be able to come back is anyone’s guess, and whether he returns at all to competitive golf at all remains up in the air.

Still, McIlroy knows he will give it an effort.

“He’ll try,” said McIlroy about Woods playing again. “I know he’ll try. But that’s a question for him, not for me. I obviously don’t know what’s in his head. But judging by prior behavior, he’ll definitely try.”

Woods starred alongside McIlroy in their simulator golf league, TGL, this season. While both players’ teams — respectively Jupiter Links Golf Club and Boston Common Golf — are not part of the postseason conversation, they competed regularly with Woods having played just last week in the final regular season match.

Tiger has not played on the PGA Tour since the 2024 Open and admitted that he had barely touched a club since the death of his mother in early February. Woods withdrew from the tournament he hosts, the Genesis Invitational, three days after committing to the field amid her passing.

Not having the Genesis Invitational in his pocket, Woods was going to arrive at Augusta National without having played a single professional round during a season for the first time since 2022.

“He said he’d only touched a club three times or something, so I wouldn’t say he’d have been necessarily close,” McIlroy said. “But he was obviously trying to get closer by ramping up and training and practicing and doing whatever he was doing. Yeah, I’d say he was trying to catch up on some lost time there.”

Patrick Cantlay among longshots to back at TPC Sawgrass

Many fans consider the Players Championship golf’s “fifth major” and a look at the 2025 Players Championship field justifies that claim yet again. Multi-major winners like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas will tee off from TPC Sawgrass in Florida on Thursday, March 13, and they are sure to be popular 2025 Players Championship bets. Scheffler is the +360 favorite (risk $100 to win $360) in the latest 2025 Players Championship odds. Russell Henley, last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational winner, is a 45-1 longshot coming off his fifth PGA Tour victory. However, he’s missed the cut in four of his last six starts at the Players Championship. International players have won seven of the first 11 events on the PGA Tour this season, which bodes well for Ludvig Aberg (20-1), who finished eighth in his Players Championship debut in 2024. Aberg is +175 to finish inside the top 10 and +330 to crack the top five at the Players Championship 2025.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, is up nearly $9,000 on its best bets since June 2020. This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters.

Now that the 2025 Players Championship field is locked in, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and revealed its longshot betting picks:

Hideki Matsuyama (30-1 at DraftKings)
The 33-year-old opened the 2025 PGA Tour season with a victory at The Sentry. He continued his strong start while making the cut in each of his seven tournaments with three top-20 finishes. Matsuyama ranks third in the FedEx Cup standings early into the 2025 PGA Tour season. Matsuyama has 11 career PGA Tour victories, along with eight international wins, and won two PGA Tour events last year. He is sixth on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained this season.

Matsuyama is coming off back-to-back top 10 results at the Players Championship, finishing T-6 last year after placing fifth the year before. He’s finished eighth or better in four of his last seven Players Championships at TPC Sawgrass, so he should feel confident heading into the weekend. DraftKings Sportsbook has Matsuyama priced at 30-1 odds:

Patrick Cantlay (35-1)
Cantlay has two top-five finishes over his first five events of the 2025 PGA Tour season with his ability to capitalize on Par 4s boosting his results early into the season. The 32-year-old is second on the PGA Tour in Par 4 average (3.85) with his second-best birdie average aiding that. Cantlay is 10th in scoring average (68.63) while ranking 12th in total strokes gained.

Cantlay has just one top-20 result over seven career Players Championship events, but the eight-time PGA Tour winner and 2021 Tour Champion has been a proven winner throughout his career. His struggles at TPC Sawgrass have dropped his price to where the model sees strong value in him being included in 2025 Players Championship bets.

Shane Lowry (40-1)
The 37-year-old Irishman has made the cut in four straight Players Championships with three top-20 finishes. Lowry finished seventh at last weekend’s Arnold Palmer Invitational after finishing T-11 at the Cognizant Classic the week before, so his game is trending in the right direction. Lowry has just one round over 70 during his last two tournaments and that success can carry over to the 2025 Players Championship.

Lowry is 10th in the FedEx Cup standings behind his hot start while ranking 11th in total strokes gained. Lowry won’t be a popular play in many 2025 Players Championship bets, but the model believes his odds indicate a golfer being overlooked given his recent stretch.

Mavericks predicted as No. 1 landing spot for Heat All-Star by former Dallas forward

Some may not be convinced, but a former Mavs forward could potentially help sway their opinion. Chandler Parsons believes that Jimmy Butler would be a better fit in Dallas than with the Houston Rockets.

“To me, it’s Dallas,” Parsons said on Run It Back. “You go there, and there’s a pecking order. It’s known; this is Luka’s team and then there’s Kyrie, and then there’s Jimmy Butler. And weaknesses for their team is defense, so I think he can provide them a lot of things, fill a lot of holes that they don’t have quite yet.”

Butler is interested in joining the Mavs, though it seems like his main priority right now is to sign an extension with the Heat, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

The price will be steep for the Mavs if they decide to pursue the six-time All-Star. It could require them to part with Klay Thompson early on in his contract, either Daniel Gafford or P.J. Washington, Naji Marshall, Jaden Hardy, and perhaps a couple of first-round draft picks.

The 35-year-old forward hasn’t proven he can stay healthy either, missing the first round of the playoffs just last season.

If Butler could at least be healthy for the playoffs, he’d give Dallas the 3-and-D specialist who can score the ball at an elite level. He would also give the team an enforcer, which is especially helpful against some of the best wings the league has to offer.

Knicks predicted to acquire ‘microwave scorer’ via trade with Jazz

One Jazz player who is sure to attract various suitors is 2020-21 Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson. Fadeaway World’s Fran Leiva believes the Knicks might be able to pry Clarkson away from Utah for a package of Mitchell Robinson and two second-rounders.

“Jordan Clarkson … is still a microwave scorer who can light it up in a hurry, whether as a starter or off the bench,” Leiva said on Tuesday.

“Utah’s looking to prioritize its younger pieces and future picks, and moving Clarkson would align perfectly with that plan.”

“For the Knicks, adding Clarkson would be a no-brainer. Their bench has struggled to provide consistent offense outside of Deuce McBride. Clarkson instantly solves that problem. … His ability to handle the ball also takes some pressure off the starters, giving the Knicks more options late in games when rotations tighten up.”

“Robinson has been one of the league’s best rim protectors when healthy, and his shot-blocking presence would complement Utah’s younger core. The two second-round picks sweeten the deal, giving the Jazz more flexibility to build for the future. It’s a trade that allows them to move off Clarkson’s contract while staying competitive in their rebuild.”

Clarkson would be a pivotal addition for the Knicks, but can they pull off the deal without giving away too much? Jazz exec Danny Ainge is a notoriously dangerous trade partner.

Full stats from Lakers rookie Bronny James’ 30-point explosion in G League

The G League South Bay Lakers lost to the Valley Suns, 106-100, but the story of the game was James.

Bronny dropped 30 points on the Valley Suns on 13-for-23 from the field to go along with three rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block.

The reaction on X was explosive on Thursday night in reaction to Bronny’s big performance. User @jbondwagon hilariously suggested that Bronny should immediately replace Gabe Vincent on the Lakers.

“I’ve seen enough. Bronny > Gabe Vincent,” his post read.

James was drafted at No. 55 overall by the Lakers this past summer. Bronny began the season on the Lakers bench but was assigned to the G League in early November.

It appears that the G League is doing wonders for Bronny’s development already. James was unable to play a full college season at USC due to a frightening cardiac arrest he suffered in July of 2023.

It’s great to see Bronny balling out at the professional level less than two years after the health scare.

Why Hawks and Thunder are destined to meet in final of in-season tournament

After an entertaining quarterfinal round in the NBA Cup, we are now down to four teams that will play down to two on Saturday in Las Vegas. The Hawks will take on the Bucks in the matinee, followed by Rockets vs. Thunder in the evening slot.

These four teams are well-deserving of representing their conferences in what has to this point been a series of very entertaining games. The matchups here are fascinating, and they could lead to some surprises.

Here’s who has the edge in the two semifinal games. All odds courtesy of BetMGM.

SN’s NBA HQ: Live NBA scores | Updated NBA standings | Full NBA schedule

Odds: Hawks +3.5 (-110) | Bucks -3.5 (-110)
The Hawks are the hottest team in the league. They’ve won seven of their last eight and were impressive in holding a top Knicks offense to just 100 points in the quarterfinals. They seem to have figured out the formula to maximize Trae Young, surrounding him with dynamic wings who can play good defense and utilize the advantages he creates for them.

The Bucks haven’t been too bad themselves, winning 11 of their last 14. One of those losses came earlier in the month against the Hawks, where they were run off the floor in a 119-104 blowout.

The Bucks have gotten Khris Middleton back since then. While he has shot the ball extremely poorly, hitting only 25 percent of his field goals, he has organized the team well.

Middleton is recovering from surgery on both ankles and he’s not going to help the Bucks’ biggest issue. Their transition defense has been poor for a while now, and that showed up in the Dec. 4 matchup where the Hawks outscored them 30-12 in fast break points.

Milwaukee is favored in this matchup, but it shouldn’t be. Atlanta has the specific personnel and playstyle to give it a lot of problems, as New York learned. The Bucks have looked sluggish and old against the fastest, most athletic teams. Add in Doc Rivers’ noted issues in high-profile games, and this should be an upset for the Hawks.

Odds: Rockets +4.5 (-105) | Thunder -4.5 (-115)
If you enjoyed the 91-90 rock fight between the Rockets and Warriors in the quarterfinals, then this will be another great game for you.

Oklahoma City and Houston both have historically elite defenses that rely on a fairly simple recipe — have a ton of unbelievable 1-on-1 defenders. There will be floor burns, shoving and extracurricular antics in this game based on what happened the last time they played.

The Thunder have the edge here because while both teams will make scoring tough, they have an offense that is still good enough to score. No defense can stop Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from slithering his way to the rim. He’s averaged 30.5 per game in two matchups with the Rockets this season.

The Rockets are much rougher watch offensively. They’re going to be held below their season average of 112.7 points per game. They don’t have a singular star who can get them a bucket when they need it, which leads to occasional long dry spells they can’t afford in this matchup.

Oklahoma City will also have super sub Alex Caruso available, who missed the last meeting between these teams. He hasn’t shot the ball particularly well, but he has been chaotic on defense and gotten every important loose ball by diving on the floor.

These are two very good teams and whichever one wins should be the favorite against the Bucks or Hawks. Ultimately, that will probably be the Thunder.

How good is Bryce James? Updated scouting report on LeBron’s youngest son in high school

With LeBron James in his 22nd NBA season and Bronny James in his rookie season, Bryce James is the next family member to take another step in his basketball journey.

Bryce James is a 17-year-old senior at Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, Calif. As the son of LeBron James, Bryce has been in the spotlight for his entire life, but he’s now working to carve his path to make a name for himself as a player.

‘Proud’ Benzema calls time on international career with France

While he might not have the recruiting profile of his older brother, Byce James is a three-star recruit who has picked up a few Division I scholarship offers.

With Bryce James’ high school career winding down, there are questions about his standing as a player and what the next step of his career will entail. Here’s a closer look at what he brings to the table on the court and where he could elect to continue his playing career after high school.

Bryce James scouting report
Bryce James strengths
James’ strengths begin with his size. He’s listed at 6-4 and 190 pounds and, at 17, may not be done growing.

In recent years, James’ athleticism has improved vastly. He’s used his athleticism to make plays on defense and finish above the rim with a clear lane.

— Overtime (@overtime) August 2, 2023
Since an early age, James’ biggest strength has been his 3-point shooting ability. (LeBron James has long claimed that Bryce is the best shooter in the family.) He shot 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) from distance over five games at EYBL Session 4 in Kansas City, Mo, a glimpse of the type of shooter he can be.

Bryce James has improved so much!!!! pic.twitter.com/al8RqPnrra

— Chris Brickley (@Cbrickley603) July 2, 2024
As a prospect, James is a bit harder to evaluate because of limited time playing with Sierra Canyon. After his sophomore season, James transferred twice before returning to Sierra Canyon and briefly sat before returning to the floor. He has yet to take the floor during his senior season. Instead, he has been out of uniform on the bench for undisclosed reasons.

Bryce James weaknesses
The lack of film hurts, but James needs a clear identity as a player and the role he can excel in.

As good a shooter as James has shown the ability to be, he appears to be a streaky one. After shooting at a blazing clip during EYBL Session 4, James shot 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from deep during the Peach Jam.

James’ offensive game is predicated on his ability to spread the floor. If his shot isn’t falling, he hasn’t yet shown the ability to make teams pay in other ways.

If James can work past the streakiness — a common trait for young players — he becomes a very intriguing prospect.

Shooting aside, James can benefit from more reps to improve his all-around game. He’s shown flashes of athleticism but can he be considered a plus athlete? More film can answer that question.

If so, James can carve the role as a 3-and-D player, which is a great archetype to fill in, especially if he continues to grow. Improved shooting, a defensive identity and an evolved offensive game will allow James to be a difference-maker now and at the next level.

Where is Bryce James going to college?
Bryce James’ recruitment has not been heavily documented but he has scholarship offers from Ohio State and Duquesne, per multiple services. He has also reportedly taken unofficial recruiting visits to Arizona and USC, his brother’s alma mater.

Like his older brother and father, James was born in Ohio and has a direct connection to the area. A commitment to play for the Buckeyes would signal a homecoming of sorts for James, though his family moved to Southern California in 2018.

Dru Joyce III, a childhood friend and high school teammate of LeBron, is in his first season as head coach of Duquesne. The familial connection undoubtedly has a hand in the school’s interest.

As of Dec. 13, Ohio State has signed two players in the 2025 high school class while Duquesne has signed one player.

James had an ultra-efficient first half for the South Bay Lakers, scoring 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting including a perfect 3-of-3 mark from 3-point range. James also added a block and an assist, committing two turnovers along the way.

While he shot 0-for-6 from beyond the arc in the second half, James piled on 17 more points without any turnovers in what would be a narrow Lakers loss. James finished an efficient 13-of-23, adding three rebounds and two assists.
